Juglans nigra, commonly known as Black Walnut, is a large, deciduous tree valued for its strong timber, rich-flavoured nuts, and striking presence in landscapes. It features a broad, rounded canopy with deeply furrowed bark and lush, pinnate leaves that turn golden yellow in autumn. During summer, inconspicuous greenish flowers appear, followed by hard-shelled walnuts that mature in late autumn.
Ideal for large gardens, parks, and rural properties, Black Walnut requires ample space to grow. It thrives in deep, well-drained soils with full sun exposure. The tree produces a natural compound called juglone, which can inhibit the growth of certain nearby plants. Regular pruning helps maintain its shape, and harvesting the nuts can be rewarding.
