Opuntia Burbank Spineless is a versatile, drought-tolerant cactus prized for its smooth, spineless pads, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscapes. This unique variety, developed by horticulturist Luther Burbank, retains all the resilience and striking appearance of traditional prickly pears without the spines. Its thick, fleshy pads store water, allowing it to thrive in arid conditions, making it ideal for xeriscaping and rock gardens.
In late spring to summer, Opuntia Burbank Spineless produces large, showy yellow flowers that attract pollinators, followed by edible, deep-red fruit. It grows well in full sun and requires minimal watering once established. This hardy plant is perfect for adding a sculptural element to gardens while requiring little upkeep.
